Welcome to the North Berrien Fire Rescue Department’s employee application process.  Supporting your local fire and rescue department is a wonderful and meaningful way to serve your community and help your friends and neighbors when an emergency strikes.  Being a member of the North Berrien Fire Rescue Department separates you from the rest of the community as you are looked at in a different way.  Your friends and neighbors know that no matter what time of day or night, weather condition or time of year that when the community needs you, you will drop what you are doing and respond to their needs.

Fire and rescue work is hard, challenging and at times may require you to step up and go beyond your comfort zone to make the rescue or save a life.  There are very few occupations that can match the level of gratitude and fulfillment you receive than the fire service.  As a member of the North Berrien Fire Rescue Department you become part of a worldwide brother / sister hood of fellow firefighters.

The North Berrien Fire Rescue Department is a consolidation of the Coloma Fire Department and Hagar Fire Departments (formally Lake Michigan Beach Fire Department).  The Department has a roster of 25 members and serves the communities of Hagar Township, Coloma Charter Township and the City of Coloma located in Berrien County, Michigan.  The Department operates from two fire stations located at 170 Washington Street in Coloma and 3061 Coloma Road near Riverside.

The Department’s response area includes about 10,770 residents and covers an area of 31 square miles.  Interstate highways I-94 and I-196 cut through the response area along with the CSX Railroad and the Paw Paw River.  The area is comprised of many fruit and vegetable farms and is also known for its recreational areas that include the Lake Michigan shoreline, Paw Paw Lake and Little Paw Paw Lake where many year round and summer homes are located.

The Department is made up of Paid on Call firefighters and officers with a full-time fire chief.   The North Berrien Fire Rescue Department is dedicated and committed to responding to the needs of the community, working with other responding agencies to resolve problems and provide a positive and professional service.  The department is supported by its Firefighter Association and Ladies Auxiliary for fundraising and rehabilitation support during larger events.  An appointed Joint Fire Board provides for the oversight of the fire department and hires its fire chief.

The guiding principals for the department are: Respond, Solve Problems, Be nice.
